Celebrating 50 Years of Caring for Our Communities
Every community has a story. It is shaped by the people who call it home, the families who build their lives there, the businesses that create opportunities, the schools that inspire future generations, and the organizations committed to serving others. For the past 50 years, Health West has been honored to be part of those stories, walking alongside our patients through life’s milestones, challenges, and celebrations.
Each August, National Health Center Month recognizes Community Health Centers and the essential role they play in improving the health of our nation. Founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare, Community Health Centers are nonprofit, locally governed organizations built to serve everyone in the community. They provide far more than primary care, offering comprehensive services that improve health, remove barriers to care, and respond to the unique needs of the communities they serve. Today, more than 32 million Americans receive care through Community Health Centers, demonstrating the vital role they play in expanding access to high-quality healthcare across the country.
Health West’s story began in 1976 in the rural farming community of Aberdeen, Idaho. Local leaders recognized that families were traveling long distances or simply going without healthcare because care was not available close to home. From a single wide trailer, they established more than a clinic. They built a community health center dedicated to ensuring their neighbors could receive quality, affordable healthcare close to home. Fifty years later, that mission continues to guide every decision we make.
What began as one rural clinic has grown into a regional healthcare organization rooted in southeastern Idaho and, more recently, serving communities in northern Utah and western Wyoming. Today, Health West provides comprehensive medical, dental, behavioral health, women’s health, pediatric, and pharmacy services while expanding our School Based Health Center program from 13 to 18 schools to bring care even closer to students and families. With same day and next day appointments, clinics embedded in the communities we serve, acceptance of all major health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, and a Sliding Fee Discount Program for eligible patients, we are committed to making high-quality healthcare accessible, convenient, and affordable because everyone deserves timely, quality care close to home.
As our communities have grown, so have the needs of those we serve. Every clinic, partnership, and new service has been guided by one simple question: How can we better serve our communities? That question is especially important in rural America, where many patients still travel an hour or more to receive healthcare. We believe where someone lives should never determine the quality of healthcare they receive. Our responsibility extends beyond treating illness. It is about improving health, preventing disease, supporting families, and strengthening the communities we proudly serve.
None of this would be possible without partnership. Together with schools, universities, hospitals, health plans, primary care associations, employers, businesses, local governments, nonprofit organizations, foundations, and community leaders, we have expanded access to care, strengthened the rural healthcare workforce, and created opportunities that benefit generations to come.
As we celebrate National Health Center Month and Health West’s 50th Anniversary, I am deeply grateful to everyone who has made this milestone possible. Thank you to our patients for placing your trust in us and allowing us to be part of your lives. Thank you to our employees, providers, volunteers, and Board of Directors for your compassion, dedication, and commitment to our mission. It is inspiring to see what this team accomplishes every day. Your talent, passion, and commitment to putting patients first are the reason Health West has earned the trust of the communities we serve. Thank you to our community partners, including schools, universities, hospitals, employers, businesses, local governments, elected officials, health plans, foundations, and fellow nonprofit organizations, for believing in our mission and working alongside us to improve the health of our communities.
Finally, to the communities across Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming, thank you for welcoming Health West and allowing us the privilege of serving you. Every milestone we have achieved has been made possible because of your trust, partnership, and support. As we reflect on the past 50 years, we are reminded that our legacy is not defined by buildings or anniversaries, but by people, relationships, and lives changed.
Thank you for being part of our story. We are honored to continue serving our communities as the next chapter begins.
